Photo Paper

November 18th, 2008

Having a great printer with wonderful inks is not the full solution. We judge a product based on its outputs, and prints consist not just of inks but paper as well. The market today is filled with variants of paper, ranging from archival to watercolour, to photo paper. Even more confusing are terms such as matte coated and RC base, used to describe the coatings. Just what do those geek-sounding jargon mean and what can they do for you?

Is fading inevitable?
In the photo printing space, the term “fade resistance” applies to the ability of the print outputs to combat fading due to exposure to light or other fade-inducing agents (Ozone) in the air. Through their own and independent lab tests, manufacturers often rate the durability of their photos in years. To do so, they determine the types of chemicals and environments that cause the colorants to fade and accelerate the process. The fade-resistant lifetimes of the media are accurate only for light fading as there are currently no standard methods for estimating and accelerating air-induced fade.

Light fading is caused by both visible light and ultraviolet radiation. These agents break up the colorants over time and cause them to lose those bright, saturated colours, leaving photos looking dull and plain.

How to Select Good Quality Photo Paper!

June 19th, 2008

Being not a specialist in photo printing, how can you ensure that you will get excellent print-outs even in your home! Well, a proper selection of Glossy photo paper will help you in this regard. There are certain criteria that make photo paper worthy of selection. You can judge the papers on the basis of the criteria and make your pick. Brightness, weight, caliper, and finish should be the main point of importance while making a decision.

The opacity factor

It is a technical truth that the higher the opacity of the photo paper, the less the printed text and images will bleed through to the other side of it. So, examine how transparent is the paper! If you are thinking of double-sided printing then give special emphasize on this point.

How white is white

Brightness of photo paper plays an important role in the quality of the pictures. And there are many different levels of whiteness or brightness. Technically brightness is judged as a number from 1 to 100; and a height of 90s make good quality photo Paper. To determine brightness simply compare two or more papers side-by-side. Along with these factors, give importance to other points like weight of the paper and their finishing.
